I love learning something new while reading historical fiction. I'd never heard of the Lost Friends newspaper column published in the Southwestern Christian Advocate, which sought to bring together families torn apart by slavery.
This dual time-line, post Civil War novel tells the story of one family in Louisiana and how slavery, separation and lies affected them both past and present.
I was enthralled while listening to the audio edition.

I finished this book 3 days ago, and it is still stuck in my head!
While I know writers have a whole purpose with their order of events in books, I truly wish that the ending had been put earlier, so I would have liked Benny more. I found my person and would love to have known about hers earlier. #lisawingate

This was a very fascinating book told in mostly two points of view alternating between 1875 and 1987.
This book deals with quite the heavy topics but also topics that are important to talk about and sit with.
I really enjoyed both of the two main characters as well as the mention of letters from a variety of people.
Highly recommend this book.
Trigger warnings: slavery, kidnapping, forced servitude, families separated, death of family, bullying, racism

Disappointed to read the perspective of an African American girl written by a Caucasian woman. Did not read as authentic and at times missed the mark.
Such an important story to share. I found Hannie’s point of view more impactful than Benny’s.
Excellent book based on historical fiction in the south.

DNF was too boring and no plot by 50%. But based on the good reviews I’m going to try again
Two times, two races, one story, one house. Good, compelling writing.
“…with generations of history I can only guess at, I feel my own vulnerability with strange acuity” (p. 145).
