4.0 AVERAGE

Meh. I wanted to care more than I did.

This dual-timeline historical fiction had potential, but it just dragged. The concept, based on real “Lost Friends” ads, is powerful, but the delivery felt too soft and slow. The modern-day storyline was especially bland. I kept waiting for something gripping to happen… and kept waiting.

Not terrible, just forgettable.

Really good story and interesting history. I just can't give it 5 stars because the ending was a bit rushed and too many plot items not really finished (but i don't want to give away any spoilers).

I wish it had only been about the 1875 character.  The 1987 one was annoying.

4.5 stars. First book ive read by this author and I look forward to reading more.

I loved this book, but I have some mixed feelings.

Hannie's story is so well written ... so involved ... I could feel where she was ... I was fully immersed.

Benny's story is ... predictable. The white teacher swooping in to save the poor, mostly BIPOC students. I have so many "why?" questions about this character. Why is she white? Why is she shallow? Why does she have a secret? Why does there have to be a romance?!? She could have been a much deeper character to match the level of Hannie.

The overall story of Lost Friends is amazing. The author includes actual copies of the ads from the newspaper. Heartbreaking.
