Loved it! I've come to appreciate so much about John Flanagan's writing style and his attention to detail. This was one of my favorites in his series so far. I especially loved the way he built up his female characters without belittling them in any way. These books are ones I highly recommend to anyone with young readers and a thirst for adventure.
I really liked all of the ranger's Apprentice books I recommend for ages 11 and up.
A stark departure from the rest of the series quality-wise. It feels over-stuffed, with derivative world-building, and suffers more than any other in the series from the author's unintentional sexist tropes.
It's plodding, the characters barely develop, and when they do, it's a sexist stereotype. I do not recommend. Especially not for kids. I'd hate for my child to learn societal norms about women here.
Honestly, just read the first 4 books in the series and stop there. The rest of the series is fine up until this one, but there are too many in my opinion. Those first 4 books are excellent however.

The Ranger's Apprentice series is a solid fantasy series with interesting characters (particularly Ranger Halt) and good writing. The fantasy world is fantastical without being so complicated it is impossible to keep the geography and language straight.
Although not genius or good-v.-evil epic, each book is an enjoyable read, and unlike many series, I think they got better as the series went along. The Emperor of Nihon-Ja is the 10th and final book in the series and it wraps everything up in a satisfactory manner. Although this series is considered a children's book, I am an adult and I recommend it for all ages.

I think this is my favorite of the Ranger's Apprentice series yet! Flanagan brings all of your favorite characters together in this novel. Horace was on a diplomatic mission to Nihon-Ja when he suddenly finds himself in the middle of a coup. When words gets back to Halt and Will, they immediately jump at the opportunity to help, as do Alyss, Evanlyn, Selethen, and, of course, a few of their favorite Skandians. But will they be able to find the emperor's hideout in the mountains? And can Horace even help the emperor when the situation appears so bleak? Read on, rangers.
Learning about the customs and traditions of Nihon-Ja was a really interesting experience; I can definitely see resemblances between Nihon-Ja and the Japanese culture. That said, I don't really feel like this book contributed much to the overall plot of the series, save for the character relationships of course, but, other than that, there wasn't really much relation to the other books in the series. Reading it as a stand-alone would probably work, maybe some clarification would be needed here and there, but if you read this book on its own without reading any of the other books, you'd probably still be able to follow along. However, this was a still all in all enjoyable book, and I definitely recommend it.
