I put off reading the final book in this series because I felt like the author had pushed a little too hard to find another adventure for the rangers. Boy, was I wrong! I LOVED this one. It was fun and engaging and just as good as the others. I am so sad to be done with the series--it's one that I wish the author would keep writing until he dies.

For me, not the best book in the series. It started off pretty slow. For the majority of the book there is a big buildup to a final battle that ultimately felt quite rushed.
I missed some of the more ranger elements in this book, maybe because the plot was more centered around Horace.
I did not like the whole subplot with the girls, it all felt a little forced. The whole jealousy girl drama between Alyss and Evanlyn is just not good. It's written poorly and breaks characters of both girls. They are both intelligent, strong and smart women, not squabbling teens.
keeping in mind this book was written over a decade ago, I still enjoyed the easygoing plots, the humor and the cosy feeling you get while reading this series

One of my favorite installments in the Ranger's Apprentice series. It nails the world and importance of honor and "face" that the Asian societies hold close and the character of Shigeru is superlative.
The marvelous scene with Alyss, Evanlyn and the Kyofu is an absolute stand-out.

"What's this Kurokuma business?"
The Senshi looked at him with a completely straight face.
"It's a term of great respect," he said. Several others within earshot nodded confirmation. They too managed to remain straight-faced. It was a skill the Nihon-Jan had perfected.
Read aloud for the kids. They enjoyed it and want the next one, so I guess that's the main thing.
I had a lot of nits to pick but won't list them all. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it as a middle-schooler rather than coming to it as an adult and wanting more than just shallow action-adventure.

me when every western fantasy series has a japan arc for no reason at all
This is a 4.5 rating
Though the book starts out a bit slow at the beginning, it quickly picks up speed, following the adventures of familiar characters including Horace, Will, Halt, Horace, and Alyss. Politics and fighting tactics add an intriguing twist to an action-packed tale. Strategically placed instances of humor and brilliant military plans manage to outweigh the strange, mostly unnecessary subplot of Alyss and Evanlyn's little cat-fight. All in all, The Emperor of Nihon-Ja is a satisfying conclusion to the Ranger's Apprentice series.
