Even with his ham-fisted foreshadowing and incredibly obvious plot, I still keep coming back for more. The strength in Flanagan's writing comes in his characters, who make my heart swell with their wide-eyed dedication to the people who rely on them. Even if there were no surprises along the way, I kept on reading. Four stars from my twelve year old self.
LOVED it! Sad the series is over though. Definitely one of my favorites.
i’m already upset i can’t read this again for the first time
my goodness the ending

Nearing the end of the series. I’ve really enjoyed it.
Definitely a step up from the previous entries. While it still has a very familiar set up, it feels different enough to stand out. Supported by a cast of new, interesting and well realised characters, the ~500 pages I read were very entertaining.
My main criticism does remain and that is that the stakes don't feel as high as they should because it always follows that familiar formula. Though I am not sure I can complain too much about that. The series already stands out in that regard because the 'heroes' actually have to kill and take risks.

I've read this series with my boys - this is the final one and it's a good one!

The final book of the Ranger's Apprentice series (kind of excited about that because this is like the series that never ends--even though I like it).
Horace has gone to train with the warriors of Nihon-Ja. When he doesn't return as planned Will, Halt, Alyss, and Evanlyn go on a rescue mission, escorted by the jovial Skandians. There is enough of everything here to please fans. Friendly banter and joking between Will and Halt, lots of action-battle scenes and fighting for Horace, planning the fights for Will and Halt, and of course the amazing arrow shooting skills of Will and Halt to save the day.
