A good romantic novel to pass the time. Not revolutionary but sweet.

Quinn's attempt at a love at first sight, with fathers who cause trouble.

Robert and Victoria were going to run away. However, Victoria's father discovers her sneaking out and ties her to her bed. When Victoria doesn't show, Robert believing that he has been stood up takes off for London and his father lets Victoria believe that when she didn't show up and his seduction failed he went back to London.

Victoria has been a governess for 7 years when Robert stumbles across her again. The spark is still their but can they overcome their misconceptions...

Absolutely awful. This book could have been a quarter of the length if they just talked. Oh, that thing you thought I did, my dad did it. Bam. And then the refusal to forgive after acknowledging it wasn't really either of their faults? Excrutiating. Boring. Slow. Worst book I've read by Quinn.

I liked the whole concept of starting off the book with a love at first sight meet cute, unfortunately that means the entire rest of the book is a series of obstacles and misunderstandings keeping the H/H apart. I think in the hands of another author it wouldn't have been handled as well as it was here, so that made me feel much better about the book. Manages to have just the right amount of angst without going overboard.

I also liked the very brief mention of the Duke of Ashbourne, the hero of Splendid. Nice to imagine that these many characters living in the same time period might actually bump into one another on occasion.

Really 3.5 stars. I love Julia Quinn's books but this one left me disappointed. I like my heroes a bit more dangerous.

This is basically a story of love at first sight gone all wrong. If it could go wrong for these two, it did. I did enjoy the story, but some of what I read was sort of out of character. If you are looking for a nice story about love at first sight, then this is for you. A most definite pleasant read on a lazy day.

Of all of them, this reminded me of some of the more silly 18th century fiction between the character development and slightly bizarre, flitting plot.

2.5

this book.... did not age particularly well. i liked the big trope in this (essentially a second chance romance, which is one of my faves) but the way it's been executed.... uhm, stupid and boring and quite tiring (
Spoilerthere's also like.... three attempted rapes on the main character and by the second one i was already so fucking tired
)
however, there's truly no one that writes angry men and banter quite like quinn and this was extremely fast to read, so extra points for that. the dialogues are delicious.
