It's clearly early Butcher, which means it's rough and more than a little sexist. When it gets out of its own way with that bullshit, it's entertaining and a fun adventure.

It just wasn't for me, I think, which is too bad - I was suspecting it would be. But I think the early and intense violence against women just left a bad taste in my mouth which tainted my ability to get into it, I think. It has some great concepts and narrative structure and character arcs, for sure - and I am curious how Tavi does in the next book in particular, but I probably won't continue on the series.

I am so incredibly disappointed. I had expected the same caliber of story telling as The Dresden Files and got The Kardashians instead. Dry, characters and character storyline was all forced and grey. Bleh. So, so sad about this one.

Ultimately this was pretty mediocre. It has its few moments, but the writing was poor and the plotline was riddled with cliches. As much as I feel like this author may have some promise, I can't help but feel like it is books like this that turn people away from the fantasy genre.
