I wanted to like this book more. At 339 pages, there is ultimately 100 or so pages of story material here. Much of the rest is inserted at odd moments and disrupts the narrative with filler that, while interesting, does not contribute to the main story. Although the cover promises it to be about the "birth of the FBI," the FBI was already established before the murders took place. Grann is an excellent writer for individual chapters, but they do not add up to a cohesive thrilling tale.

If you’re interested in learning about the Reign of Terror in the Osage Lands this is where to start. While not a huge fan of his narrative device, without a doubt it is meticulously researched, well-written, and provides enough suspense to keep the reader engaged

no rating because i feel weird about doing so. what i will say is that this book is dense af and i wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t have a lot of time to spare. it took me about five hours total to complete this, and while the history itself is interesting, the writing feels a bit like trudging through a thick swamp. i did enjoy this, but i also think most people wouldn’t be able to finish it.
