I’ve read this book before, but not with a real eye towards actually writing for my personal goals/with a novel in mind. It is chock full of useful tips, lovely meditations on life and writing, and plenty of humor and empathy for writers. I’ll definitely be making this book part of my (very small!) forever library.
funny informative fast-paced

I kept being recommended this book before I finally decided I’d just have to read it. I’m so glad I did. There were so many laugh out loud moments and I really loved the honesty about the business. I think some of the references are a little dated but it is over 25 years old. An encouraging, deeply reflective read for aspiring authors.

Topic wasn't my jam.  Love, love her other books, though!

My PC meter went off a few times, but otherwise I really enjoyed it.

Incredible book on writing and life. Although I am not much of a fiction writer, I found Anne Lamott's thoughts helpful, interesting, and insightful. I especially liked the notecard idea to capture bits of information here and there as it comes to you. The word that came to mind while reading, particularly the second half, was chatty but not in a demeaning way. I just imagine that she talks how she writes, or writes how she talks. Her writing about her son, father, and own life touched me in its realness. I like that. An author who doesn't shy away from the hard stuff but also makes it ok to crack a joke at a funeral. The dark humor mixed with the reality and absurdness of it all in addition to a keen sense of attention to detail makes me want to read more of her.

Recently reread this book, and it's still great!

The worst part about this book was that I got it from the library so I couldn’t write all over it. This is the writing guide I so badly needed - honest, big-picture, funny, and full of beautiful things that seem tangible. This book made writing feel possible against all odds (and there are plenty). I’m going to have to buy it so I can come back to it again and again.

Front describes as "Some Instructions on Writing and Life". That it is.
Re-read it before returning to library and bought a copy.
