I read this in college on the recommendation of my thesis advisor and I loved it so much that I bought a copy of it for myself. I'm not sure if it holds up but I remember this being a seminal stepping stone in my thesis journey.

Lamott's funny and wise advice on writing and overcoming perfectionism is exactly what I needed. I think I should schedule regular readings of this book to keep myself motivated and encouraged.

This would have been a solid four stars (or perhaps even slightly more) if it weren't for Lamott's casual ableism and, shall we say, Lena Dunham-ish, I Am A White Woman sensibility re: humor and race. I'm tempted to dock another star just re-reading the first sentence of my review.

But parts of this book are genuinely wonderful and encouraging, and I can see myself referring back to it for help with things that I struggle with as a writer. Much like Stephen King's On Writing, this is thoroughly Lamott's voice and sensibility; the way she weaves personal anecdotes into her advice is pretty great. When she's giving advice from a place of real earnestness and love for the actual practice of writing (which is often), this book truly shines.

I enjoyed it but didn't love it. I think I would have preferred to read it instead of the audio version. Some few good takeaways for sure though.

I've actually been reading this slowly for several months, a chapter or two at a time. I loved it, and will reread, maybe dipping in to individual chapters. It's about writing, yes, but there's an awful lot that really applies to anything, any creative endeavor, and frankly, just living your life.

Very funny, very thought-provoking.

LOVE any nonfiction/memoir by Anne Lamott. Lovely read if you are interested in the art of writing, but worth it as a commentary on life, as well.

Always enjoy Anne Lamott - its like having a conversation with a good, clever friend.

Anyone who is a writer should read this book from Lamott. Her pragmatic advice is witty and she has a keen eye for observation. Sometimes I found her narrative over-written and started skimming, but I still thoroughly enjoyed reading her story.

This book is not just good for writers, it's one of the best psychologists I have ever met!

A good friend who is encouraging me to write suggested I read this. It's a funny, personal, and useful guide to anyone wanting to write. Anne gets personal at times, but always with insightful wit and charm. It's an easy read and I'd recommend it (even if you're not wanting to learn about writing).
