I really like Tao and Riley and their slow burn into mating both being hurt in the past. Riley is great as a person the children trust and relate to. Also her story in the flock was great... until the end and the repeats.
So the end really brought down this story so greatly... again as it is recycled from all the past books, and my complaints are pretty much the same. Up to the end, she does a pretty good PNR with a good back ground on characters. Then the end comes and it is once again repetitive. This is recycled and I'm getting really tired of the brutal battles as distractions, and then multiple injuries It starts to look like the pack is pretty poor at protecting their own.
So the bad guys, recycled and not sure what the gangster was trying to do as he wanted one woman so capture another. Why this one in particular and not one of the long time pack? Kind of stupidJust expect it (the recycled ending battles) in these books.
It could have got a 4 but I almost want to give it 2 but I liked it better than that, just was mad/bored at the end.

So there is the bitch of a crazy bad woman that attacks, yes, almost always a crazy woman. She has added in a secondary bad guy, which she has in other books also, and they are usually politically motivated. Well here is the thing, bitchy bad women tend to be sneaky and don't attack outright with force. They can but statistically it is men (usually young men) that attack ex-girlfriends, family members, school colleagues that bully, etc... but she seems to think that this is mainly a woman's domain and here we are again with a crazy mother that attacks all the people she blames for her son's death. She physically is able to enter into pack territory when there is a distraction/ attack (this is by the politically motivated gangster) and overly brutal battle. Many people are injured/hurt to the point of needing several healers.Spoiler
with critical injury to our main character. And again kids with no hidey holes so the kids are threatened again. So the bad guys, recycled and not sure what the gangster was trying to do as he wanted one woman so capture another. My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.
So, after a book with the Mercury Pack, we are back to the Phoenix Pack. Tao is a character that I’ve enjoyed since the beginning of the series. He’s the head enforcer and has been with Trey since he started his own pack. He is a bit on the quiet side and a little grumpy.
Riley is a raven shifter. She is staying with the Phoenix Pack. She left her flock (that’s what they call a group of raven shifters), but no one knows why. She was with a group of lone shifters and helping with orphaned kids. She sorta adopted two (a cheetah and a snake), but she doesn’t realize how much (those kids are hers in every way but officially).
I’ve been a fan of this series for a while. It is starting to get a bit stale to me. The women all seem the same. They are all very strong willed and speak their mind. Don’t get me wrong, I love those traits, but it seems like every new female character is almost exactly like the one before it.
The plot lines aren’t very strong. We get to learn more about Riley and the raven shifters. That was interesting. There was also another storyline, but to be honest, I can’t even remember what it was (yes, I waited too long before writing this review). I know it had something to do with humans. I did love the kids. They were a lot of fun and added to this story.
While I did enjoy this story, I really wish it had more story and less sex. I don’t mind a lot of sex in a book, but here it just isn’t working for me. I want more relationship. More suspense and less Greta (Trey’s grandmother who has been grouchy from the beginning. At first it was funny, but it has just gotten old. I’m really tired of hearing her call every single new girl a “hussy”, with the exception of one).
If you’re looking for a paranormal romance with some sexy shifters, this is a fun series. I know I sound like I didn’t enjoy it, but I did. I think I’m just wanting more than I’m getting. Still worth the read.
Narration
I’ve really enjoyed Jill’s narration of this series. I think she does a great job with all the characters. She does the perfect voice for the excessively grouchy Greta. She does really well with the kids. I like her male and female voices. So, ya, I just like her overall.

As usual with this series, there were some great moments of suspense and action. Riley and Tao were good as a couple, and they acknowledged their faults and talked things out. Surprisingly, I would have liked a bit more about Cynthia to have been discussed. There was a particular plot point (revealed by Duncan) that I felt really should have gone somewhere instead of being something just mentioned in passing.

3.5 stars, well written, but lacking the sizzle of [a:Suzanne Wright|5769764|Suzanne Wright|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1331458504p2/5769764.jpg]'s previous novels in the Mercury Pack Series. Although a standalone novel, Fierce Obsessions is part of two established series and refers to characters and events from the previous novels. To get the most out of the novel, understanding the full range of the characters and avoiding spoilers for the rest of the series, it's best to read the series in order, starting with [b:Feral Sins|22580149|Feral Sins (The Phoenix Pack, #1)|Suzanne Wright|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1407790460s/22580149.jpg|19083644]
I was looking forward to reading Tao's story after his turbulent start in [b:Feral Sins|22580149|Feral Sins (The Phoenix Pack, #1)|Suzanne Wright|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1407790460s/22580149.jpg|19083644]. The introduction of Riley and their acrimonious interactions seemed to be building to a mating of epic sparks flying. However, what the novel delivered was a relationship that didn't sizzle, so much as fizzle and seemed to miss some key relationship development points. They're both likeable characters, but I felt a little short changed by the mating dance between them, especially given how Tao appeared to seriously dislike Riley when she was first introduced. At times it felt a bit like Wright was just going through the motions and her heart not in the story.
I also found the plot a bit choppy, I really like this series and hope the next instalment gets back to the 5 star form.

with the dual stories of unrelated bad guys that didn't have any direct connection with each other, yet seemed to coincidentally work with each other in the big showdown. Not to mention each of the 'bad' factions were a bit lacklustre.

This book took me like a week to finish. Mostly because of graduation and everyone being in town to celebrate, but still. I enjoyed Riley and parts of Tao, but I really felt like of all of the couples from the Phoenix and Mercury Pack and the Olympus Pride series, Riley and Tao were the strangest fit and the least convincing as true mates. However, if they weren't true mates, I would have had a hard time believing they could even imprint so I guess it had to be that way. What was really strange was how their bond snapped into place immediately without any need to complete it or further steps to take. That hasn't happened before and was particularly unusual for this couple who was so mismatched. I think it was mostly because of how Wright portrayed Tao's feelings about Riley in the beginning when he just wanted a casual hookup. He repeatedly emphasizes how their relationship started as a fling without any sort of deep feelings from either party and Wright talks about how these comments are ultimately honest. I don't have a problem with a casual sexual relationship developing into more, but this then felt too quick and thus Tao's feelings felt disingenuous. In the space of just a few weeks they decide that they don't actually hate each other and that they belong together and Tao just sort of gets over all of the negative feelings he had about Riley (or does he really?). When they were together I didn't mind them and I actually liked the FMC gimmick that Wright is notorious for including here - Riley repeatedly steals away small items that belong to Tao and refuses to admit it (it fits with her being a crow shifter I guess). Per usual the multiple plot lines were absolutely batshit and not played out to their full potential. Plus, the weird empathy for a mass shooter was just a no from me.
