I actually have never read the previous books in this series/universe. This copy was discovered in the booth I worked at during the Origins gaming fair last June. As we were not able to return it to lost &found as they were closed already, this came home with me and traveled to Gen Con in hopes the person who lost the book might be attending & we could reunite the book with them.

However, this did not get reunited with it's previous owner, and I started reading it during the wee hours of the con.

I loved this book. It was an amazingly complex space opera and I am going to love reading the past parts of the story. But my biggest trouble with the book was the similarities of the names of characters. I'm not sure if it is just because I was reading this like a stand alone book, or just having trouble differentiating names while reading. Even though this is the fourth book in the series it was an enjoyable read on it's own. And the authors did a great job of retelling events from the past books without making the book seem bogged down with detais

I read Plan B immediately after Partners in Necessity, despite my iffy review of PIN, because it was already on my shelf and I figured what the heck. Bottom line is that I think these books are wildly overrated. Clearly there are some true believers for this series, but for the life of me I can't figure out the draw. The writing is not particularly artful, the romances (which I gather are the big attraction for some people) are thin, the "science fiction" elements diluted, the plot arc is sluggish, and there are no overall themes I can discern apart from "stuff happens to people." New magic powers are constantly being pulled out of a hat to solve problems. The dialogue frequently is unintentionally hilarious, and the cover art looks like it was done by the authors' next door neighbor's cousin's son. I will not be moving on to the next volume.

Rated it lower than some of the other books because of some tedious sections during the battle at the end of the book.

I actually own a compendium of "Plan B" and "I Dare" called "Korval's Game". This was a fun read...it was fun re-visiting characters I first learned about in "Conflict of Honors", "Agent of Change", and "Carpe Diem".

One of the best things about reading these books is the reactions of other people who recognize them. I'm pretty sure one coworker thinks I'm 40% cooler after seeing this in my bag (while another coworker is now 100% certain the other two of us are complete nerds).

An exciting installment in the Liaden saga. Trying to evade the Department chasing them, Val Con and Miri go to the planet Liktut where her ancestral clan is headquartered. But they barely arrive when an Yxtrang force attacks the planet. Battles ensue. As well as lots of plot twists. A very enjoyable tale.
