Wonderfully complex story with several key women fighting for their different countries. Great strong and complex women with an impossible eventually common enemy. I enjoyed this immensely and it is highly recommended.

Instead of being overwhelmingly disrespectful, I’m just gonna say this book fucking sucks. Skip it.

Could’ve left about 400 pages on the floor of the editing room. Biggest miss of the year. Probably the biggest disappointment since I’ve started goodreads

I really liked this book. I wasn’t sure how I would feel and it took me a decent amount of time to get into it and the characters and the setting. By the end I really appreciated it. My audiobook had a talk with the author which made me love it more.

A Day of Fallen Night was excellent. It was much more enjoyable than Priory of the Orange Tree because I already had a grasp on the deep, deep lore of the Roots of Chaos universe and didn’t have to work quite as hard to remember the geography or religious history. So enjoyable, in fact, that I finished it in two days, which is really impressive on Samantha Shannon’s part because it’s over 850 pages. Each of the four heroes, Dumai, Tunuva, Wulf and Glorian, are wonderful and so different. The thematic thread through all their stories, and the book broadly, was lineage, legacy, and the terrible burden we place on women to act as wombs without a will of their own. Some of the women in this story escape this burden, and some don’t, but it follows and haunts all of them, and is key to the progression of the story and their lives. But besides the delicious themes and gorgeous language, The Day of Fallen Night is just delightfully fun. The chapters are short, the pacing is perfect, and the length… is exactly what I wanted.
