I liked this better than the first book. I was more happy to hear from all the different POVs and I felt each character was more equally developed. It was also very nice to see some familiar names and the origin of some of the things (e.g., warlord of Seiiki, the dragon riders, why Inys has the Priory protection ) we see in the other book.
There were more moments here when I felt heartbroken by a character's ending. For better or worse, some things did not hold intrigue because you know what the world looks like in the future from the other book. The ending was better than the first book, but still a little rushed.
True to the high fantasy genre, it still takes a while to understand and be immersed in the world - I had to take notes of characters and what region they were from.

The story is compelling but the pacing was weird in a way that was very frustrating. Every time something big happened to Character A, the chapter ended and you lost all the tension and buildup because you won't see Character A again for three chapters (because you're going back to characters B, C, and D). I enjoyed what I could glean from the world-building and I really did like the characters but the pacing really sucked.
Shannon has good characters, good writing, good world-building, but alas she is missing the crucial element of a good story: a good plot.

Absolutely god tier book! I thought that nothing would ever top Priory but I don’t know when I will stop thinking about this book. I both listened to the audible audiobook and read the novel because I couldn’t stand not being able to continue to the story in the car.
The audiobook has fantastic narrators and I would recommend it!
I’m not going to put any plot details in this review but let me just say, if you want fantastical ultra detailed world-building in your fantasy novels; and characters whose journeys and developments blend together so seamlessly that they feel like they could jump off the page?
Read this book.
