I wish I had the energy to write a thoughtful review because this book deserves it but I’m super sleepy so this will be short and sweet. Suffice to say that while this story wasn’t perfect, I loved it.

The character building made this story for me. Not only were the main characters interesting, flawed and likable, the secondary characters were also captivating, thoughtfully crafted and rich. Even the “villains” had depth and nuance that brought them to life in a compelling way.

Though I’m not a fan of insta-love, Henry made it work here, partly because Min admits multiple times that though he hasn’t known Kaz long enough to feel “love,” his feelings are strong and are inspiring him to act in ways out of his norm. I liked that admission and the reality that sometimes we go with our gut for reasons even we don’t truly understand.

There was one small detail during the conclusion that seemed a little too convenient. That detail and the insta-love are why I deem the story less than perfect but between all the other elements I LOVED, not the least of which were Knifebeak and Taavi, I’m giving Anhaga 5 sparkly stars.

One of my favourite comfort re-reads

“Friends don’t reanimate friends’ corpses.” Words to live by

This was just okay. I typically enjoy this author's work -- and this was no exception. There were moments that felt like a spectacular 5 star read -- excellent world building and intrigue -- but the book was inconsistent and unfortunately, failed to grab my attention in the way I was hoping it would. In the end, despite having finished this book a few days ago -- I'm having trouble remembering what it was about or who the MCs were. Aspects of the story were disturbing and quite dark (which affected my enjoyment). I wasn't really drawn in and sometimes struggled to stay engaged. I wish I loved this one more than I did ...

adventurous

A cosy mix between the Six Of Crows world and some fae but in an adult book.
I loved it.

4 stars: I really enjoyed this!
I hit play on this audiobook not really knowing what it was about but I was pleasantly surprised! The mechanic to set up this detail was... questionable... but god I love fantasy stories where queerness is just a regular casual and accepted part of society and is integrated so innately. I'm tired of all the open possibilities of a fantasy world only to be so small minded when it comes to this. It feels like a breath of fresh air with stories like this and Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick, which I'm reminded of for the way it's just so natural with the worldbuilding that gender and sexuality is fluid and accepted. Marriage alliances that don't care about genders is a detail that will always get me. The detail in question in this story to show that fact may not be quite romantic or aspiring but I at least appreciated the considerations of the worldbuilding. Despite that, the actual romantic plot of the story was sweet and tender and also very much made me laugh to listen to it while at work where people kept interrupting me to ask questions, not knowing exactly what I was listening to in my headphones.
