There's a girl from Kansas with a small animal companion, who gets stuck in a twister and wakes up in a magical land. Her name is not Dorothy. And it becomes immediately apparent that there is something very wrong with Oz.

I think I like the idea of this plot a lot more than the execution. Dorothy finds life back home very boring, and discovers a way back to Oz. She soon takes control, turning the land into some sort of tyrannical nightmare. A heroine has to fight a Dorothy the dark witch, her Tin Man, Lion, and Scarecrow - it's a good tag line. But Amy is not a very coherent character. I wasn't super impressed with any of the characters really. And the gore seemed to be a bit over the top. I won't be reading the other two books in this trilogy.

It's wild reading about some of the most wholesome characters ever, who I used to imagine as my friends, being the most evil monsters wreaking havoc on Oz. The story is so engaging and is one I think about when I'm not reading it. Some things I wish the author had done more explaining or world-building for, instead of "somehow..." things happening so often. Still, this is one of my fave YA series. The characters are interesting and it's so captivating seeing another take on OZ.

I don't want to say that this is the best book I've ever read. But I also can't say that it's the worst. And I think the only real reason it got past 3 stars is just because it kept me fairly interested the whole time.

There's nothing terribly unique about this story. After all, it's set in the Wizard of Oz universe. And it's not even all that unique to imagine that things aren't perfect there, I think Wicked has done a pretty fair job of showing. Even the main character Amy is a pretty stereotypical rebel. She was far from my favorite character in the beginning, but she grew on me later on.

This book suffers from a lot of cliches from the (kinda) insta-love to the ridiculous absentee parents. If it's been in YA lit it's probably in this book. And it probably comes as no surprise too that our heroine is shockingly the only person who can possibly save Oz, even though she's not even from here!!! What a twist! *sarcasm implied*

Whatever. This isn't a bad story, in fact there were parts of it that I really liked. But I also feel like it's a little lazy to rest all of your story on someone else's work. It's really not that much different that AU fan fiction to be honest, and that seems to be a trend lately. Maybe I'm just jaded, but I like a little creativity. And when it came to retellings, I just enjoyed Splintered more.

i don’t think i liked this book very much because it was kinda juvenile, it reminded me of something i’d read in middle school. but weirdly enough, i want to read the second one? i’m invested in the series even though the writing isn’t very good lol
