An emotional read about a couple breaking up while one is still grieving the death of her mother 26 years earlier. The author, Hazel Hayes, writes with strong, vivid emotion the agonizing break up of a couple after a 6 year, on-again/off-again, relationship. The book moves, with powerful language. My issue is some of the timeframe between the death of her mother and the actions of people in their mid-30’s.

this was haunting but such a real and raw depiction of grief and heartbreak and how the two intertwine, and beautifully written. the ending left a little to be desired for me, i felt there wasn’t much closure on kate and finn but also this was probably intentional and does make sense.

After reading the author’s debut novel, I was very excited for this one. Overall it was a good read. I was engaged, which I worried I wouldn’t be since I don’t really relate to the topic.

But there was quite a bit of emotion, and I felt for the main character.

Also, the author narrates and her Irish accent is stunning

grief can be paralyzing, a set of shackles that keep you from experiencing life and stymies creation. i feel like my experience of the book was elevated by watching all of us strangers concurrently, which also dealt with the loss of a parent in the most achingly earnestly hopeful of ways.

The beginning was super good, the middle was losing me a little, but then it all came together in the end and was fantastic. Not my favorite book overall, but a good read.
