Picking this book up was a no-brainer, because Hazel Hayes’ last book (‘Out of ‘Love’) was amazing, and to this day is one of my favourite reads.

To start with the things I liked: Hazel’s writing is just something else. Her prose is always stunning (both because it’s beautiful, but also because it can take you so off guard - but in a good way). The way she tackles loss both in the sense of losing someone through a breakup and through death is profound. The sections of the book where the main character’s nightmares are described were amazing, I love how Hayes moves really seamlessly between genres.

However, I do have to say that I did at times find it a slower read. The pacing was off a little at times as certain parts dragged. The writing was often introspective in the extreme, and also very philosophical and cynical. If that’s your thing, you’ll love it! But it wasn’t always my cup of tea. I also think I would have connected with the book a lot more had I experienced a massive loss in my life recently, but (mercifully), I wasn’t quite able to relate in that regard. I would recommend this book to people who have experienced heartbreak/loss as Hayes really does a wonderful job of describing the reality of it all and I think it could (possibly) be a kind of comforting read (but check trigger warnings!)

Overall, I will always love Hazel Hayes’ writing and I don’t regret reading this book. There were several instances where I was moved by her way with words, and I also really really loved the Irish culture that slipped in. I always love when the setting of a book is like a character in its own right - gives a story so much more atmosphere and life in my opinion.

I recommend that you give it a go, especially if you can relate to themes of loss, grief, and depression (but again, check trigger warnings etc to make sure you are comfortable reading!)

Kate and Finn break up, and Kate is heartbroken. She and Finn decide to keep the lease on the house until it ends, alternating the weeks they stay there. Kate is a writer and attempts to write her next book, but she just writes her feelings about Finn.
She also tries to come to terms with losing her mother when Kate was a young girl. She has never fully processed this loss and has nightmares from it.
Kate and Finn go back and forth, but Kate must examine the relationship and decide what is best for her.
Emotional and heartbreaking.
