i cant seem to stop reading about grief!! almost like it overwhelms and permeates ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. lol anyway.
as a massive fan of out of love, i had high expectations for this book - it was absolutely my most anticipated release of the year. with hazel's writing, you can't go in expecting anything. you have to let her show you where its going, and once you have surrendered to the book, you'll have a much better reading experience. in this book, the prose goes everywhere, touches everything. at points, you feel confused as to where its going, and yet hayes always brings it back into focus in such a satisfying way. hayes' writing takes so many avenues, lets you get lost in it in a good way, before bringing you home. i just adore it. i love hazel's continual subversion of writing tropes and genres in both of her books, and the fact that you can see her humour so obviously through this book. so entertaining!!
that being said, i didnt absolutely click with it. i cant put my finger on it, i just wasn't... hugely excited reading this. the ending felt a bit... predictable. not in an underdeveloped way just... i like books that have ambiguity at the end i guess. also i kind of wish there was a bigger commitment to horror, yknow what i mean? like MORE.
i think a lot of this is coming from my place of anticipation and expectation for this book, because im still giving it a high rating so i did still absolutely enjoy it. idk idk.
overall, an easy, good read. i will read anything hayes puts out!

This is unlike any book I’ve ever read, it’s about grief, a break up, and a person who experiences night terrors. It’s like a sad reflection of a relationship, the grief of loosing a parent, and then vivid nightmares and the terror this women experiences with hallucinations and fear.

This book was really, really beautiful; it also heavily features dead mom trauma, so be aware if you accidentally end up finishing it on your dead mom’s birthday.
