Delightful, whimsical, adventurous, and so original, I adored this Newbery winning tale about a stray dog Johannes living in a huge city park (inspired by the Golden Gate Park). I listened on audio and Ethan Hawke was incredible.

The entire book is from the POV on Johannes. The POV is spot on. Everything is captured perfectly through the eyes of this courageous, loyal, but sometimes distracted dog.

I laughed, I cried, I cheered, I gasped throughout this book. Read it asap, you're in for a treat!

Such a beautiful work of imagination and love of nature. All the characters were so wonderful and the world was beautifully described. Audiobook was fantastic.

This one is really different. The audiobook narrator had a very believable dog voice and I would recommend this to adults who like shorter audiobooks as well as to children- the characters are adult animals.

There's a lot to take in here including the value of freedom over captivity and a subplot involving ritual suicide for gulls who have become disabled (although the narrator dog does not support this). Kids might also be troubled by the idea that dogs don't want to be kept as pets. More sensitive kids might do better with it as a readaloud.

2.5 stars. It’s a beautiful book but I wasn’t gripped by the story. It seemed all over the place. Maybe that was the point? To see life from a dog’s point of view?
