4/5 stars. Very cute story, the audiobook was excellently narrated by Ethan Hawke. He truly brought this book to life. I hope to buy a physical copy to see the supposedly beautiful illustrations.

"Here, the dogs are dogs, the birds are birds, goats are goats, the Bison Bison.” As someone who quickly tires of overly long metaphors, it's refreshing to get this reassurance right from the beginning. I think this book is begging to be read aloud. I loved the paintings and was shocked to find out at the end that each was by a different artist mostly from the 17th century. Eggers solid storyline subtly weaves in rich, beautiful language. The narrative frequently indulges in humor, particularly through Johannes's boasts, and invites you to appreciate the joys of engaging with well-crafted writing.
