I can’t decide if I really liked this or hated it. I found it pretentious, especially for a children’s novel, but I also found it to be endearing in a way. This would have been 1 star automatically if the gull died. Luckily he didn’t and I don’t have to riot.

This is definitely not a book for me...kind of confirming my dislike of Newbery Award winners to be honest. I guess that if you liked Edward Tulane, maybe this book would work for you as well, but I kind of found it confusing at first, then pretentious at the end, and I'm not really sure about the kid appeal of this book. I did read it on recommendation from a students, so I guess some have enjoyed it. There was a really strong narrative voice which probably is the strongest part of the book in my mind, even if it grated on me at times.

A truly delightful children’s story, made infinitely better by Ethan Hawke’s engaging narration. This book would just be enjoyed by children with their grown-ups, perhaps on a road trip, where the kid can stop to ask for clarification on vocabulary and the adult can stop to ask for clarification on meaning.

I hadn’t read any Dave Eggers in years, and while this is a novel for younger readers, the anthropomorphic animals were entertaining. The story was adventurous, and the relationships between species were sweet.

I loved this and all my kids loved the audiobook. A great listen for a road trip. Every time the ducks came up we were all cackling. Just a beautifully written book with a great story.
