I was hooked on this book almost immediately and couldn't put it down. It was a considerable inconvenience having to go to work this morning with only a handful of pages left. I managed to finish the book by hiding an on-line version behind a couple spreadsheets and pretending I was analysing numbers.
The uncertainty of not having a body when investigation a murder provided an interesting twist to the story. Not only was I wondering 'who dunnit' I was also wondering if anybody actually 'dunnit' in the first place.

I chose this book because I loved the Prime Suspect series (TV) and wanted to try out some Lynda LaPlante.
It reads as if it were written 20 years ago. The attitudes about everything from workplace sexual harassment from a former lover (and now boss) to a homosexual co-worker seemed to be a bit outdated.
The procedural part of this was fine. A decent whodunnit though with a lot of unnecessary explanation of the finer bits. The characters were wooden and two dimensional - hard to relate to or like much.
It was what I imagine it's like reading Barbara Cartland's 73rd romance novel - I get that she is good at what she does, but maybe stuck in her time a bit.

Okay I was a little disappointed with this ending. I wanted a different end I figured out early on that one of the murderers was that actual murder. But I still loved Anna Travis I need to read the first 3 books because I had no idea that the fourth book was not the first book but this was a nice change for my reading pattern. Going to be picking up the first few books in this series.

I must remember to read more of this author. She has terrificly complex stories and just enough flawed protagonists to keep from being cliched.
