an interesting novel. although the writing style was good and easy to read, about halfway through the plot seems to drag and becomes a lot less interesting. at least to me, anyway.
I'm wavering between three and four stars for this one. The oppressive atmosphere of the caves and the deadly heat of the swamps were so well described that I was completely immersed in the setting, but the characters were all pretty two-dimensional. "She" and Holly's long, meandering conversations became tedious, and then there were all the awful declarations of love for the scary lady. I for one am glad I'm immune to her powers! I think the description of the climax inside the volcano will stay with me for a long time. *Shudders*
Obviously, this was written at the height of the British Empire, when my fellow countrymen would wander into any unsuspecting nation and start shooting locals and animals alike so there's a lot of that kind of attitude to contend with, but, honestly, I was expecting worse. At one point, the main character actually describes himself as a misogynist but he wasn't half as bad as some men I know from this century!

The beginning of the book was the best part, in my opinion. I think that Holly is hilarious without trying to be, and I love all the British dry humor....and I get it because I read and watch too much British stuff...sigh. Anyways, up until the point where they finally meet She, I was into it, but after that it got kind of boring. Ayesha was on my nerves the whole book, and I literally cheered when she shriveled up and died after standing in the Fire of Life. Holly and Job and Ustane were my favorites. Leo was ok till he saw Ayesha's beauty, then he was just a wuss even after she died.
I thought it was a very interesting and creative story, but I felt that Haggard spent too much time drawing certain scenes out, like the exploring of the Tombs. Other than that, it wasn't bad, but if I read again one day it will be as an actual book, not online, cause I think that made it worse.

This book embodies the nightmare or fantasy (a strange mixture of the two) of 19th century white colonial patriarchy. It is dated and quite bad. However I find it interesting to read and dissect ideologically.
