The last 50 pages or so was exactly what I had hoped the whole book would be, they were absolutely enchanting. It was a bit of an uphill climb to get to them though!

I’m sure everyone who read this realised that the drunk caretaker was the horned figure pretty early on.
Scooby Doo villains are disappointing because they’re human and not actually a horned forest demon with cool season-changing armour that falls off for his victims’ souvenirs. What’s up about leaving them alive? Does he get his kicks from just spoiling them and watching as they wake up and find their way back out of the Wood?
Was he holding up a dead Mary on the wall every single time just to mess with the Americans or were they really seeing an apparition?

A gothic and well weaved story, In The Night Wood is a book that I heard some hype about it and wanted to check out, as the fairy tale and gothic writing fan I am, and I wasn’t disappointed.
The story’s mood and the atmosphere Bailey creates in this book makes this book such a delve into dark and gothic writing that just works throughout the whole of this tale. Haunting and ever developing, this story develops our characters really well from start of the book giving us an idea of the kind of people they are and it makes for a gripping story.
I feel though the story however takes a bit of time to really get started, and it does I think eventually come into it’s own, but what I find in this book is how the story builds is through the characters but also how Bailey writes about the scenery in this book. How he builds the woods in this book and how he builds the tension and foreboding around the house is done brilliantly throughout the book, making me want to keep reading.
I feel like this is this book is like a grown up version The Hazel Wood, and touches on so much more as this book goes into different themes, like grief, memories and fairy tales. it’s really really good.

Lo sabía. Sabía que la historia de misterio y fantasía iba a ser una excusa para insertar drama, y aún así lo he leído. En lugar de terror, encantamientos y maravillas, tenemos la información de que Lissa está muerta. En cada párrafo. En cada capítulo. Ya sabemos que la familia pasa por un duelo. Por favor, sigamos con la parte que habla del Rey del Bosque. Es la interesante.

El libro está bien escrito (me parece que la narración es su fuerte) y la trama es interesante, me parece que avanza un pelín lenta (o a lo mejor parece que va más lenta por las veces que se repiten algunas cosas). La premisa me parecía muy interesante y buscaba leer libros estilo dark academia, y este prometía ser uno de ellos.
Hay unos pocos spoilers sobre el prota y la relación con su mujer!!
El libro me ha gustado pero no he podido disfrutarlo más por el protagonista y narrador. Al principio me caía bien, pero a medida que avanzaba la trama le iba detestando más. Me parece un rey de la luz de gas (gaslight) que aunque su mujer le ruegue de rodillas y llorando no es capaz de dejar su orgullo de lado y la deja ahí en vez de reconocerle las cosas. Y luego, aunque encuentra algo que solo confirma que no esta loco prefiere dejarla pensando que está loca a ayudarla a pasar el mal trago!!
También me ponía muy nerviosa la cantidad de veces que pensaba en otras mujeres. Se pasa toda la novela repitiendo que se arrepiente de su error y sin embargo se pone a pensar en otras mujeres y su examante todo el rato. Y encima tiene la poca decencia de ponerse cachondo aún sabiendo todo el daño que le hizo a su esposa y a su familia esa aventura (si de verdad te sintieras tan mal de verdad te pondrías cachondo?). Yo creo que la verdad es que no se arrepiente de nada, solo se siente culpable porque la niña estaba en medio, y que en realidad se arrepiente de no haberlo gestionado mejor no de haberlo hecho.
Siguiendo en esa línea, me pareció muy fuera de lugar cuando la nueva amiga casi le besa después de contarle la historia. Ella no había dado pie a nada durante el resto de la novela, siento que fue la manera fácil de intentar redimirle diciendo: mira, se preocupa por Erin y ha aprendido de sus errores. Pero no. Es el típico tío bueno que no se ha comido una rosca que en el momento en el que encuentra algo de atención se cree mejor de lo que es.

El resto de personajes me han gustado en general, aunque tampoco son nada especial. Al final me parece que Erin es la víctima de todo el libro, de la situación, y espero que después del final pueda dejar al imbécil ese. También es cierto y diré rompiendo una lanza hacia él, que si ella ha decidido perdonarle el seguir manteniendo ese rencor no es justo para él (aunque entiendo que la situación es delicada)
El final también se me quedó muy precipitado. Últimamente me ha pasado con varios libros, así que no sé si es que yo me espero otra cosa o de verdad es algo de los libros.
Al final el libro se me ha quedado un poco flojillo y esperaba un misterio un poco más grande, porque ya te puedes imaginar por donde va (que tampoco me parece algo malo en sí, aunque prefiero que me sorprendan no me molesta que vayamos conociendo todo de antes, pero en ese caso me espero un final algo más fuerte). La ambientación estaba muy muy lograda y me ha gustado mucho, al igual que la narración, que me ha parecido bonita. Pero el prota me rompe todo, no lo he soportado.

ANOTHER ADULT FIC WITH ADULTERY WOW WHAT A NOVEL PLOT POINT.
But the creepy fantasy elements coming into the real world and a very old murder coming to light was cool. I just wished there was more resolution at the end - I had many questions that weren't answered (but I'm sooo picky with my endings). Anywayssss mediocre in the very predictable adultery plot line but with some really pretty artwork on the cover so it'll stay on my bookshelf.
