I did really enjoy this book, especially the last 20% or so. However, there wasn't really anything original in this book and there was a lot of meandering around the middle section. I think this series has a ton of potential if it can find itself. Interested to see where book 2 goes!

Kind of reads like Throne of Glass fanfiction, with even worse overuse of certain words than SJM. (Take a drink every time someone "purrs" or "croons" and you will have alcohol poisoning by Chapter 2.) The audiobook narrator's performance was grating to me, and I believe a lot of things may not have bothered me as much had I been reading instead of listening. All the same, there is something that has me hooked and I will probably try the second book.

Feels like a setup / prequel book?

I don't love when 4 men are obsessed with one female character.

Another top read of the year!!! Lady of Darkness was so unique and hard to describe without spoilers but there were also elements of Crystal Bloom and War of Lost Hearts, and ambiance of the Shepherd King duology. I cannot wait to continue the series, I’m very glad I don’t have to wait for the next book! I asked a few people who have read both LoD and the Legacy series and the consensus was to start with LoD which I am soooo glad I did! Scarlett is a badass but she has also been controlled by so many and I can’t wait to see her unleash in book two. Please ensure you read the trigger warnings prior to picking up this book, it is not a light read, but it is really crucial in shaping who Scarlett becomes. Here are some of my fave quotes:

“You are fierce and strong and a survivor. You need no one, Scarlett Monrhoe, but wouldn’t it be nice to have someone there with you so you can rest and take a breath, even if only for a minute?”

I am no goddess, Prince. If I am, I am one of darkness and secrets, but your dreams of me would certainly be beatific.

Scarlett studied her hands, turning them over in her lap. “I wish to protect those I love. I wish to be in a place where I can protect those who cannot protect themselves and help those who cannot help themselves. I wish to be in a position where I can free those who find themselves locked in cages they do not want to be in.”

“The light can always be found in the darkness, Scarlett, even if you have to make your own,”

There is still love and loyalty and laughter in the darkness if you know where to look, even if others do not believe it exists.”

Right before she opened the window, Scarlett said quietly, “That spark has been smoldering long enough, Nuri.” A grin as dark as a moonless night spread across Nuri’s pale face. “Then fan the flame, Sister. And for [redacted], for you, let it godsdamn burn.”

“You are not alone in the darkness.

And a lovely reminder from the acknowledgements:

Finally, remember the darkest nights produce the brightest stars, and those brightest stars are worth the darkness.

QUE LIVRO!!!! ESTOU COMPLETAMENTE OBCECADA!!!!
