This book has been recommended to me by a few people, but I wasn't overly impressed. Right after finishing, I thought it might even be a 5-star read (a rollercoaster to get there, but still), yet after sitting with it for a few days, I decided on a lower rating. I only really felt invested in the last five or so chapters, even though Scarlett was insufferable through much of it. This type of FMC is usually one I love, but I found myself annoyed by Scarlett for most of the book, especially towards the end.

The twists in the final chapters did redeem the story a bit, and I can see myself continuing the series eventually. I can see where Melissa K. Roehrich might've taken some inspiration from other beloved series, but that doesn't bother me too much. If anything, that's part of why I was excited to start this series.

That being said, the writing itself was good. I did enjoy certain characters and moments, but my overall feelings are pretty mixed.

DID NOT FINISH: 4%

The character β€œRyker” had his name used from the viewpoint of the FMC with zero introduction after being introduced as Captain Renwell. It threw me off and made me question what other editing errors there would be.

If you’re a fan of Throne of Glass or The Kindred’s Curse Saga, this book should ABSOLUTELY be on your TBR!

This book was really easy to get into. I’ve been reading a lot of slow burns recently, and this one immerses you into the action and story pretty quickly & it’s so easy to get hooked

The characters are so well done, it’s really easy to love (or hate) them and by the end of the book you feel like you’re longtime friends. Scarlett is such a badass FMC with a tragic backstory that it’s hard to not be inspired by her strength, sass, and determination

The one issue I had with this book was it was insanely predictable. If you’ve read a handful of fantasy books you can see every plot twist coming from a mile away and predict the entire plot of this book within the first few chapters. I’ll admit I was a little bummed that absolutely nothing took me by surprise

That being said, Melissa is a great writer. This book was a page turner. I’m invested in the characters and hoping some exciting things are to come in the rest of this series

Great book! The ending felt a little abrupt but wasn’t bad by any means. Good writing and really good character development. Can’t wait to continue the series:)
