pierwsza połowa opowiadań była przyjemna, ciepła, miała kolor okładki. Potem zaczynały po trochu tracić charakter

So many wonderful stories, including the title one, but also 'Andado,' 'Lead Street, Albuquerque,' 'The Wives.' This collection didn't quite hit the satisfaction or novelistic arc of 'A Manual for Cleaning Women'--but I mean, that is a damn high bar. Well, I love her, and that's that.

Like the way I feel about Angela Carter, my heart hurts knowing that the words I read from this writer are finite. Once I've read them all, there will be no more.

It would be neat to say Lucia Berlin is a breath of fresh air because her writing is so different from the books I often read, but that would be a little confusing because her works are so messy. The people are messy, the relationships are messy and life is so complicated. Overall, the stories were less challenging than A Manual for Cleaning Women, but I enjoyed it just as much. There was a little less self-destruction, and perhaps a little more variety in the characters and stories. I consider Berlin a masterful short story writer, and the perfect dose of variety to spice up my reading list.
