Beautiful prose, excellent characters. I was completely torn open and devastated by it.
*There are some sensitive themes in this young adult book.*
I found the style of writing was colloquial which makes this book very special considering the painstaking emotions, as well as coming of age and heart wrenching story you experience with Hazel. Some very sensitive themes here but is written in a really poignant way.
⚠️Triggers: Death, cancer, life threatening illnesses, alcoholism, strong language, anxiety
You find within the book that Hazel makes quite a few parallels about how ‘normal’ she wants to be and it isn’t very often that you find her happy in her own skin. She constantly worries about her parents and feel she has to be strong for them which is really admirable even though admittedly and quite naturally both her parents are her constant form of support and in doing so worry about her a lot.
I wasn’t expecting the plot twist. I hadn’t watched the film prior to this so had no expectations.
I really liked how emotionally invested I was and how it kept me engaged throughout. Now for the big question: would I read John Green’s books again? I certainly would.
As I’m a harsh critic and I’m still not a big fan of books of this nature I shall give this a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ review. I’m looking forward to watching the film now to see how they portray the novel.

How have I never read a John Green book before? Must read more!
I must say that I couldn’t put this book down when I started reading, which is why I finished it in one sitting. I don’t read many books where the protagonist has cancer, and it was a new and interesting insight for me with seeing the world from Hazel’s eyes.
Why isn’t this a five star review? If this was an audiobook, it be John Green in my face talking way too fast with run on sentences. Maybe it’s because I’m a fast reader, but I noticed that many paragraphs were just one huge sentence. Maybe it reflects Hazel’s thought process, but it didn’t seem so.
It was frustrating to read at times to tell the truth. I kinda wished they took out the romance perspective because it would have been a much more coherent story between Hazel and Augustus. If anything it could been better developed. They literally had the “love at first sight” scenario, which didn’t make sense for the story or for the characters. Frankly the only character that I thought was written well was Issac, the friend that has his own struggles in the book.
But like I said, the book is easily addictive. It had its funny moments, it’s good and bad moments. I just honestly expected better from John Green. He is an intelligent man, and I loved “Looking for Alaska”. It was just frustrating that Hazel had the potential to be such a great protagonist, and yet her horribly developed romantic relationship with Augustus kind of took that away.

There aren’t enough words to describe how I feel about this book. It wasn’t what I expected and I’ve just sobbed my way through the last four chapters. Such a beautiful story and so fantastically told. I felt like I was sat playing computer games with them or at the support group. I think this will be one to read again just to fully absorb the story. Usually I devour a book but this one I did read slowly and appreciate the telling.
Possibly the best young adult book I've ever read. An achingly beautiful story of first love. Keep tissues at hand.
I didnt really understand where the story would go and even though there are many important topics in this book it didn' really catch me and I got bored. And I couldn't really relate to the main characters at all. But that doesn't mean the book isn't good. It just isn't for me.
