I just really love Maureen Johnson’s books, and this one was no exception. I’m immediately ready to go get the next one, I need answers! The mystery was extremely interesting and I love reading about someone who I can relate to so much. Murder podcasts and anxiety? I could be Stevie’s real mom! Honestly this book was so so good and I am ready for the next one.

Dramatic Mystery at its Finest!

This mystery had a touch of teen drama, but a heavy dose of “who-done-it” all throughout. The reason for four stars is that there was use of the F-word (2-3 times towards the end), and light description of a same-sex couple/nonbinary. I mention this for parents. Otherwise, the plot was excellent, the characters well-written, and the mystery continues!

Unfortunately this wasn't for me. In the beginning I really loved everything about this: I loved Stevie's character, I loved the dual timelines, I loved the insight we got into Stevie's live.
But quite soon stuff started to pile up I just didn't enjoy. First it was Stevie letting everyone use her and being a naïve/ extremely passive person, which was very annoying to read about. People kept almost walking over her and she was like "sure I'll help".
Then the love story started. Oh boyyyy... I generally don't enjoy love stories and this one wasn't an exception. It was also quite weird to read about how she just *had* to kiss him and oh how his jawline was so sharp, and his lean but muscular frame was so alluring.
Lastly I didn't like how nothing about the mystery was even somewhat resolved in this book: everything stayed open for the sequels and as a reader you literally get nothing.

This murder mystery establishes a great atmosphere on a high school academy estate built in the early 20th century. It also presents intriguing mysteries from the 1930s in parallel to a mystery on the campus today. Personally, I did not vibe with the mc's ego, but this does not affect my rating and overall enjoyment of the atmosphere.

While cliffhangers are great tools of suspense, it was a bit of a miss to not offer any real answers to at least one the many fragmented mysteries by the end of this novel. I will read the sequel, though I am wary of it dragging on and never getting answers until the third book.

I really enjoyed everything about the book, but the ending was a little too open-ended for me. That said, I will definitely finish the series. Super quick and entertaining read.
