It's a coming of age story in the back drop of the Sinhalese and Tamil war in Sri Lanka. The book focuses on the survival of the main character and his family while also navigating his queerness. It was very informative and an emotional ride.

Autobiographical feel to this coming of age story in Sri Lanka before and during struggles between ethnic majority Senhalese and minority Tamil.  All while growing up as a queer boy whose father, among others, pushes back.  The family eventually needs to emigrate to Canada to escape the death meted out to friends and family.

This novel tells the story of a boy name Arjie and his life growing up in Sri Lanka. Arjie, a boy constantly on the outside of society, is able to connect with and understand the many social and political events going on around him. He takes you through the journey he experiences growing up in Sri Lanka and allows you to discover with him the many injustices that exist in this world such as racism and sexism through a child's eyes. Though this is a 300+ page book, the style and eloquence in which it is written makes it fly by. I really enjoyed reading this book and would not mind reading it again.

Absolutely fabulous story, and a must-read!
Not only gives it a emotional telling to the Sri Lankan Tamil/Sinhalese-conflict but it tells it from the point of an sensible and different boy. Both his upbringing in a traditional family and his more and more obvious difference makes his life both richer and more stressful and embarrasing. Mix that with the political background of the book and you know you get a both funny, heartfelt and interesting reading!

So moving and somehow, quietly cataclysmic.

Beautifully written coming-of-age story.

Really loved a couple of the short stories and the main character Arjie. Not the biggest fan of the writing style, it felt awkward at times.

So beautifully written, it hurts.
