I found the use of a parable an effective way for the author to make his point about the dangers of being unaware of changes taking place in one's society. The main character, Sidi, was very likeable and the author's writing made me care so much about the fate of Sidi's bees! I loved the ending; perfectly well done in context of the author's purpose for this book.
Starts strong but the plot doesn’t make sense and doesn’t resolve in the end. Also offensively oversimplified
Beautiful storytelling
The metaphor of killer wasps swooping in to decimate just like the fundamentalists also draped in black works beautifully in this short parable for our time. Beautifully written and translated.

The ending is a bit of a deus ex machine but I liked this a lot as a deep look at a community being tossed around by regional politics. The way the Middle East is reported in the West, it's very easy to end up just going "oh everything there is war" (and my god, look at your library's nonfiction section for that region), but here's some time with the actual people.
