I really really really wanted to like this book. I love the movie and I'm a typical the book is always better snob, with limited exceptions. This is one of them. I'm sure I'm being slightly unfair, it's not like the movie, which was my first problem. It also wasn't what I was in the mood to read right now. I wanted some light, fun and girly fiction. This turned out to read more like a history book of 3 short stories that I feel never wrapped up and the "good guys" didn't win. Very disappointed.
They called it a movie tie-in but not one mention of the movie was made. It was a good book however far to informative about something things. Would be a really good book for someone who is seriously into a Capella
It was interesting, but overall, I was expecting something much different. (Also, there were a few too many sexist/homophobic jokes for me and it was a very gossipy book.)
A Capella sucks me in every time. The writing isn't particularly engaging-- it's trying to write about the characters in a subculture Iike Stephan Fatsis does in Word Freak, but Rapkin doesn't have enough focus on individual characters or the outsider's perspective that makes that book brilliant. It would be way better on audiobook with samples of the singing bent discussed spliced in. It was fascinating to see how the screenplay borrowed bits and pieces of various stories in this book to piece together a single story that's more compelling than the book. That said, I'd totally read a sequel that examined the impact of the movie and The Sing Off tv show. Especially on audio book with the songs spliced in. Or penned by Fatsis.
It was interesting in parts, but other parts I felt like it went off and didn't make sense. I felt like I learned a lot about collegiate a cappella, and I actually found it fascinating even though I'm not a singer or performer.
I wouldn't recommend this book, but I'm glad I stumbled upon it because now I have a large playlist of a cappella groups that I wouldn't have known about had I not read this book.
Also, the book is nothing like the movie; I didn't read the description before I purchased the book. I don't even know how they say the movie is based off this book...

Just finished this book. It is hard to tell the story of 3 different a Capella groups. After about 100 pages I just skipped ahead to read Divisi's story line to completion, followed by the Bubs, then the Hoo's. Too many people's storylines to follow. The author liked to jump back in time to explain past stories within a story. Overall good.
This book is hard to rate since there isn't really a story or main characters. It's non fiction and about three different a cappella bands. There were a lot of person in the book and I mean A LOT. It was hard to keep up with the names and the places. I liked it but It was missing something.
Oddly riveting for a book about a cappella. Gotta admit I'm obsessed with the movie. This is a good read if you like the movie, ever sang a cappella, ever wondered what a cappella was all about, or like those long Vanity Fair articles that go really in-depth into a certain world.
