A great book. I immediately put the second one on hold. I love the writing style and the story. I can't wait to see where this one goes.

Really want to read the sequel and see the progress of Jai.

Solid start, maybe I'll review more later.

I absolutely loved this book. Although a lot of the plot and world building is different, this book is like a much better written Eragon-like story. Matharu built a stunning world that I think that he will expand even further in subsequent installment. I also love the characters and am fascinated with the magic system and world. I plan to pick up the sequel as soon as possible.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Enjoyed neither the writing nor the characters. Felt clichéd and heavy-handed, unoriginal and tedious.

The average rating for this needs to be higher.

If you, like me, have been getting increasingly frustrated with the quality of new release fantasy books, you need to check this one out. It's very similar to Eragon, but definitely for an older audience. "Dragon Rider" is comparable to popular fantasy stories from 2000-2010, and I mean that in the best way possible. Genuinely refreshing to read a new release from a big publisher that isn't "cozy" or romantasy. Nothing really against romantasy, it's really just not my vibe.

This book is definitely on the slower side of medium paced, so just expect nothing plot-wise to happen in the first 20-30%. I'm a Robin Hobb super fan so I live for books like that. I've seen a lot of people say this book is boring so I felt I needed to say something.

Quite a few plot reveals were pretty predictable, but if you're the type of reader who gets all their thrills from twists, I don't think this is the book for you anyway. It's similar to Realm of the Elderlings in that way; plot comes second to worldbuilding, politics, and character development. Either you like that style or you don't. If you live for action sequences in books, stay far away from this book lmao.

I've already bought the sequel and I'm excited to read it. I hope this series continues to deliver; I always enjoy finding hidden gems like this.
