I read an enjoyed Kann's debut, so when I saw this extremely inviting cover, I knew I wanted to get to know that girl more. This book was not exactly what I was expecting. It was far more angsty, and I have to admit, I sometimes felt a bit confused. This could be because of the way Winnie's sort of disorganized thoughts would fly all over, but I also struggle with her relationship with Kara a bit.

Needless to say, there were many things I loved about this book.

• Winnie was not perfect, but she was still fabulous. She was a hard worker, a loving sister, a good friend, and a caring cousin. She was often concerned with making sure those she loved were happy, but she also knew when to finally draw the line and not sacrifice her own happiness for someone else.

• I appreciated all the discussion that revolved around Winnie's weight. If you have ever been or are overweight, you would have encountered many of the "helpful" people Winnie dealt with in this story. I allowed for that angst, because I am sure it took Winnie many years to be able to accept and love herself with all that noise in her ears. She challenged the idea that she couldn't like herself because she was fat or that no one else could care about her because of her weight. I really liked the way this issue was explored in the book.

• Winnie and her brother were a great team. I loved Win-Win and thought it was beautiful the way they were there for each other.

• I liked Dallas a lot. He kind of wore his heart on his sleeve and was very open with Winnie. They had a sweet little summer thing going there and also a genuine friendship.

Overall, not the rom-com I was anticipating, but I thought the story was filled with wonderful characters, lovely friendships, and some realistic family drama.

I loved this book. This is one that I desperately wish had been around when I was in high school. I’m also infinitely grateful to have read it now. I don’t know how many times I came close to tears because of this book. This book is about friendship and family, love, hope, forgiveness, and loving yourself enough to walk away from a toxic situation. Please read this book!

Winnie is one of the most awesome and relatable characters I’ve ever read. She’s fat, confident, and unapologetically herself. I loved her inner dialogue! It was so funny and real and relatable. Honestly, a lot of the passages about being fat hit home in ways that I can’t even begin to explain. And Winnie being able to voice so many of those things was just awesome.

Another thing I loved about this book was the focus on family and friendships. I loved that Winnie is the best big sister to both her brother and her cousin. She takes being a big sister seriously, and I love that. The friendship/queer platonic relationship/ungirlfriend thing between Winnie and Kara is just amazing. I wish that there were more relationships like this one in books. I also loved the way that this book dealt with racism. It wasn’t the main focus, but it really packed a punch.

If it isn’t clear by the time you’ve read all of that, I loved this book. This is one that everyone should read. If you’re plus sized, if you’re a sibling, if you love diners, if you small towns and all the quirky things that happen in them, this is the book for you. This is getting a solid five stars.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF @ 19% -- It is with a heavy heart that I have to put this one down? I absolutely ADORED Let's Talk About Love but this one just felt all over the place in the little bit I had read. For such a long book, things shouldn't feel crammed together in such a short amount of pages. I couldn't really feel the characters and overall, I was just discombobulated.... yikes.

It was lovely to see a queerplatonic relationship.

I wasn't able to finish it within the 48hrs of queer Blackathon cuz life got in the way but omg this was a lot of fun.
Claire Kann really knows how to make me laugh and I was super into her writing style. (It had pop culture references I actually got!)
I loved the setting of the small town. I loved the characters! Winnie! I thought she was fabulous. There was never a dull moment with her. Winston was all jokes. Um Dallas fell a little flat and Kara..hmmm..I don't know how I feel about her just yet, nonetheless she was an interesting character.
Overall, the plot was really fun. I would have liked a little more of the Royal Engagement going-ons. I loved the dynamics on friendship, romance, queerplatonic relationships and polyamory. But in the end the book just made me happy. It was funny from start to finish and I had a smile the whole way through. It deals with some tough content especially when it comes to family and family fall-outs, but I think it leaves room for hope at the end.

My actual rating is 3.8/5. This book managed to cover a lot, and I really liked how it handled the intersection of fatness and Blackness quite well. Fat, Black women are often mistreated by medical professionals, who see their weight has the root of any issue they may have, and I think this book did great in portraying this with the appointment scene. I also think it did a relatively good job at portraying non-traditional relationships, such as QPPs and polyamory, for a teenage audience. The reason I gave this book 3.8 stars is the various pop culture references. I have seen many books do this, specifically other contemporary YA fiction novels, and never every time these references would pull me out of the story. This book had many of them, and while I know some people enjoy such easter eggs, it's just not for me.
But reading this book is like binge watching a show, I was about 40% of the way through and I planned on reading maybe 2 chapters before bed, and suddenly I was 80% done and it was midnight.

2.5/5 rounded up.
First off let me just say this cover is everything!

I started off really liking this book and I did enjoy most things about it. What made me enjoy it less over time was Winnie and Kara's relationship. More so just Kara in general and I was seeing a lot of red flags about her character early on. Winnie apologized far too much when Kara was constantly avoiding taking responsibility for her own actions and taking the longest to apologize for some very unhealthy behavior. All of that really bothered me, Kara just comes off as really possessive.

Other than that I did enjoy this book, I really liked Winnie as a character, she was relatable and funny and the most caring.

Open, honest conversations about feelings, cutting out people who are bad for you, and a queerplatonic relationship?! Thank you.
