Beautifully written character! Salva is based on a real person, and this is the story of his trek as a "Lost Boy" from war-torn Sudan at 11 years old to his life as a young adult in Rochester. Very short and lovely book!

Handed to me by a teacher I have the privilege to work with on a weekly basis, Linda Sue Park’s “A Long Walk to Water” was an excellent read for any age. There are times that books that are written for a younger audience have the power to capture the imagination of older readers and remind us of how little we know. “A Long Walk to Water” in its concise 115 pages made it clear how little I know about the Sudanese conflicts historically and today.
This novel is based on a true story of one of the young men who are publicly known as the Lost Sudanese Boys. It is an interesting mix of his story starting in 1985 with a young girl in South Sudan in the early 2000’s. Park takes these two narratives and weaves them together to allow the reader into the fear, tragedy, hope and desolation of the various circumstances they both have to endure from military attacks to famine, from refugee camps to snowstorms in northern New York.
Books have the power to spark further research and understanding. I hope to add more books on the lives and political circumstances of Sudan to my TBR sooner rather than later.

This is a great global awareness story for upper elementary through middle school aged students. There is also a great life lesson about perseverance. "One step at a time. Solve one problem at a time." The Audible audio is a nice audio drama with music and different cast members and is very engaging. It would be great to use in a classroom as the kids read along with their own copies or even just listen quietly at their desks.
