A gentle way for children to learn about war-torn Sudan, but also human resilience and kindness in the face of tragedy.

This was an amazing story of the human spirit.

Re-read, but I wanted to follow along with middle schooler’s required reading. The audiobook is well done too. It is amazing how people survive horrors and choose not to be victims the rest of their life. Instead they are passionate about making the world a better place. I love inspiring true stories like this.

Linda Sue Park in a mere 115 pages shares two stories of two young people living in the Sudan during the years of 1985-2009. A great Civil War was happening during this time.

The dual narrative comes together so artfully and the stories are packed with emotion and grit.

Based on the true story of Salva Dut, this book will help anyone think about adversity differently and want to make a difference.

“Stay calm when things are hard or not going right with you. You will get through it when you persevere instead of quitting. Quitting leads to much less happiness in life than perseverance and hope.” -Salva Dut

Highly recommended for 12 and up!

Great book, quick read. Powerful despite its brevity.
