4 stars because I think it will only get better the older I get and the more times I read it. Will definitely need to revisit because there is so much in every sentence.. every thought— every interruption.
Woolf’s fascination with people and with life is amazing. To take an unassuming, non remarkable middle aged woman who likes planning parties and make her life, relationships, and thoughts EXPANSIVE, what a revolutionary text.
There’s some mania and horror in the stories and characters( cough Septimus) but there’s also such a sense of play and humor in her turns of phrase. Appreciated the jokes here and there that made me LOL. This is dark, but I couldn’t help but think about, despite offing herself, how much Woolf loved life. She clearly did— turning it over on every side, observing it, committing every thought of every person on a london street.

The beauty of this novel lies in the apparent simplicity and triviality of its themes that as one keeps on reading, develop into very deep and transcendental matters (age, life, death, love). The narrator jumps from character to character and gets into their minds, so we have complete access to their thoughts, worries, and memories. It all happens in just one day; the day Mrs Dalloway is giving a party, and yet we get to know the lives of all the characters. It is also remarkable how lovely it is written in such a poetic way.

This was not what I expected.
It was so much more sad and slice of life than I anticipated - and such themes for Woolf to throw around at the time she was writing!
I listened to it, and then had to go read about it to ensure I didn’t miss anything.
It was fine, reflective and sad under the pretence of frivolity…
Not sure I’d do it again.
