Though Dow dips his toes more than once into the dread waters of Nutritionism, there is lots of sound advice for how to make simple changes to your daily routine and diet to improve your brain’s health (not to mention your body’s). Now, if only we could find a way to make 8 hours of sleep possible in our modern world…

3.5ish? This book isn't revolutionary but it has some good material and inspired me to make some changes. His advice overall is pretty good - but when it comes to nutrition of course I'm always skeptical. His nutrition advice is overall not bad, but the execution is poor - telling people to radically change their diet in a very strict way for a week usually isn't going to lead to sustainable patterns for most people. I wish he paired with a nutrition professional. For example, telling the average person to go from eating minimal vegetables to seven servings of organic vegetables per day is going to cause some real GI distress, and will not be affordable for most people. Anyway, I did take away some good stuff/inspiration!
informative

In short , this book was some general knowledge with facts to back it up.

It started losing me once it started talking about how you don't need anti-depressants if you do this basic health stuff.

And then came the spirituality part. Personally if it works for you , good for you. But the way it was worded in the book just screamed " we are losing our traditions, why are non-spiritual people increasing in numbers !" That just rubbed the wrong way for me and I stopped listening to the audiobook. Being spiritual or non-spiritual are both fine , atleast for me. I just don't know why it had to be worded that way. I maybe reading into it too much , who knows.

I liked the food tips with facts in the beginning , the rest just felt like simple general knowledge to me.

There were parts of this book that I just hated. I felt that there was lots of repetition to stretch this book into more than a booklet.
Having said that, maybe everything was repeated so much to drive it into the reader's mind. It is meant as a self help book after all.
There were 3 main messages in the book:
1) Eat less inflammatory foods and more anti-inflammatory foods.
This hit a cord for me because I have Crohn's so any anti-inflammatory advice is welcome. The
part I hated was the insistance that if you don't eat fish you are basically screwed. If that's the case then I guess I'm screwed. I prefer being suggested things like eat foods with tumeric and more omega-3s and less omega-6s. I get that fish is a great source of omega-3 but so is flaxseed and fish oil supplements.
2) Change your energy by thinking positively and exercising.
This I have first hand experience in how life changing it can be. "Fake it til you make it" really does work sometimes. But I really appreciated that the author expressed that while the general population is being over medicated he also stressed that some people do truly need to be on medications to balance the brain's chemistry. But he outlined the dangers of being on medications if you are only experiencing minor imbalances. And a gentle reminder to exercise regularly never hurts.
3) Bring spirituality into your life.
This portion of the book I was a bit nervous for but the author did a good job of explaining that spirituality is not just religion. I know this but some authors just don't so I was pleasantly surprised that meditation, community, and positive thoughts were stressed.

I promise I am not going to strictly follow this program but I am going to try to take some of the things I read in this book and incorporate them into my routine so clearly not a terrible book. I think this book did a really good job of expressing that you can't just fix one aspect of your life and expect everything to magically be fixed. You need to work on all aspects of life.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone feeling a bit overwhelmed with life or just not happy enough. But, and this is VERY important, DO NOT bother with the audio book. You will benefit from highlighting, tabbing, and being able to fill out portions of this book. The audio book was interesting but I feel like I might buy the hard copy to get everything out of it long term.

I rated this book based on if I had the hard copy version but I rated it 4/5 stars.
challenging informative inspiring slow-paced

Idk this felt like a diet book more than a book about neuroscience

I feel like I maybe loste.ed to this when it first came not but never added it to Goodreads. It is definitely a product of its time, when everyone thought gluten was the Big Bad but there are still some good parts. As long as you can figure out which parts are good for you (I don't think any one diet is a "fits all bodies."
This would be better in the physical form as it sounds like there is a journal included that you don't get in the audio.
I liked the inclusion of sleep and meditation; again, they may not work for everyone but I think they're worth trying.

the book was like do this, do that but it never said how

how do i start eating healthy?
how do i start exercising?
