DID NOT FINISH: 50%

I just did not like this book at all.  halfway through I decided to give up.

Yikes. In my search for books set in VT, this came up. It is minimally set in VT, majorly set in a fantasy world that is definitely dark and just kind of weird.

A fast-paced fantasy/mystery about two friends playing a very unusual - and dangerous - game, perfect for middle-grade readers who like fantasy. Read my full review at:

DID NOT FINISH

Kept somewhat afloat by Anderson's really deep and powerful creativity, this book seems to have self-imposed limitations that keep it from rising above boring. Anderson's "Feed" is one of my favorite modern books, so I will keep looking for his awesomeness, but this book didn't click for me. Opening with a disastrous "prologue" and being the first of a series where one book would suffice ultimately make this a stinker.

Middle-grade, YA readers might love it, and there's still flashes of brilliance buried in the book.

Not a bad read, exactly, but I had a problem with the premise. What was the point of risking lives for the game of the title? It didn't really add up.

this is one of those that might have been better in print. the reader added some really odd angles to the story. also, i’ve been very distracted lately and this storyline barely held my attention enough for me to know what was going on. i had the hardest time keeping the two main characters (best friend boys) distinct in my head (”which one is the nephew of the guy they’re visiting?”) it had some very odd elements (fans of the abarat series might enjoy it) and some twists at the end, but it didn’t really do much for me.

Evocative gothic prose and great wit - what a fun romp, and an exciting new addition to the world of YA fantasy. A rollicking good time through an interesting and intriguing world of elves, trolls, magic, games, adventure, and the friendship of young boys. More frightening, funny and genuine than many books I've read of late.

I had forgotten all of the twists and turns that happened in this book. I loved the plot in this and all of the characters.

A great read aloud for my older son, alone.

A fun read overall. The writing was clunky and messy at times but it's easy to read. It was originally released in 2005 and I truly believe this is something I would have read back then in middle school. It's got some thriller aspects, fantasy and adventure. I won't be continuing the series as it's not quite what I'm into anymore.
