I am pretty neutral on this one. It's well written and there is a clear narrative with themes which are well fleshed out, but I think I was hoping for more. That in itself is perhaps the point that there is only what happens within this story. It wouldn't be something I would recommend to people and perhaps realise that stories about robots in this context may not be my thing

I don't find many books funny, but this one made me laugh a few times!

(Un)Charles was fun, and I enjoyed the "robots don't have emotions but this is what he would be/is feeling" shtic. The Wonk was a lot of fun and her driving need to know is relatable. The ending was a little on the nose. Let's all avoid that, yeah?

I would have liked more of an explanation about why Uncharles was so insistent that The Wonk was a robot despite all evidence and being directly told. Was this supposed to be the robot equivalent of denial?

Every now and then I read a book like this and think it's entirely too on the nose but then I read some other reviews and think perhaps not enough

Vacillating between 1 and 2 stars on this but I really hated every moment of it so I find it hard to justify giving it 2 stars... The prose was clever, sure. But the story, characters, plot, setting, everything else was garbage.
Basically a road trip novel (which I already hate--plots where the characters are shuttled between set pieces that have no real bearing on one another), but with annoying characters and a nonsensical world. I think it was trying to be funny? It's the kind of humour John Scalzi would like--probably why there's a blurb from him plastered on the cover.

This author has written some of my favourite books, but he's also written a lot of books that I greatly dislike. He's also written a lot of average books that I don't care about one way or another.
I don't know how reliable his name is for me anymore.
