Thrawn is by no means one of my favorite Star Wars characters, but is one I was always curious about. Timothy Zahn has satisfied my curiosity and left wanting to learn more about this Chiss’ story. While I was a bit confused by the writing style, I quickly figured it out and enjoy getting to see the world through Thrawn’s eyes. I like how this story fits into the timeline and how other characters beginnings are shown throughout as well.

Timothy Zahn ist a genius and without comparison the best author Star Wars has. The themes of this book are xenophobia, politic intrigue, the corruption of power and how it is to be a genius in a certain field.
Thrawn as main character is beautifully written and well completed with Eli as his sidekick. He is often starkly contrasted by other members of the empire and every encounter with them has a satisfying conclusion.
The second story line is what really elevated this book though. While Thrawns storyline was a bit repetitive at times and tried everything to show his talents in warfare which took away from the story at many points, the storyline about Pryce was perfect. The book itself called it a cautionary tale which is in my opinion the only description you need before entering the story. It was just the perfect tale about how power corrupts.
The meeting point of both storylines didn't seem forced at all and the conclusion with the main Antagonist was also quite good. The ending itself felt a bit too open for my taste but it is often this way for trilogies.
