I thought this would be a fun ironic read but the dialect was too damn weird and I could not follow what anyone was really talking about. Yeah it was just plain trash not even satirical
been trying to read this for over a week. should maybe have taken a cue from the endorsement quote calling it ambitious. if something is really trying than it is REALLY trying to read. it was cool, the language and world building, I guess. but also it made my head hurt trying to parse. gave up and just read the end - which I did not like, so now am glad I didn't slogh through all the rest.

And ... I'm spent. What starts out as a difficult but interesting language and fate-of-the-earth thought experiment becomes, by turns, a poetic journey into the depths of human depravity and the heights of human love and compassion, told with the same intelligence and fearlessness the author bestows upon her heroine. Worth persevering with, but not for the faint (feint) of heart.
The dialect built in the book made it slow going at times. While I think the dialect certainly added some flavor and authenticity to the story, it was also cumbersome and in some ways detracted from my enjoyment. But maybe without the distinct dialect involved, the story told is less interesting. Certainly possible. A good book that is sometimes great and sometimes frustrating to read.

This book took me quite awhile to get through, it was a difficult story to wrap my head around at certain points. The most difficult part of this book was the writing style, the way Ice Cream Star speaks is hard to understand sometimes. It is interesting to see how Ice Cream Star tries to save her brother, she will do anything to save her family from this disease that has been killing everyone. When a rumour comes around that there is a cure for what is called "Posies", Ice Cream will do anything to find it.
That is the one thing I truly loved about this book, for such a young girl she is a very determined person. It is interesting to see a girl like Ice Cream try to grow up in a post-apocalyptic world as is seen in this book. The world that Sandra Newman has created is one where children do not usually grow older than twenty, so it is a world full of young looking after the young, it definitely makes for some difficult conversations.
I am having trouble describing everything that happened in this book, it is a long story where many things happen to Ice Cream as she gains perspective on the world and the people around her. There are a lot of secondary characters who are in and out of Ice Cream's life throughout the book, and each of them have a huge impact on her future plans. I have to say that this is a book I would like to go back and reread in the future because I believe I missed out on a lot of information the first time around since it took me so long to get through. This book is one of a kind and I see it being a popular book, readers will just have to have the time to invest in reading this.

This book is epic. Our heroine, Ice Cream Star is one of the older children in her tribe, as no one lives into their twenties anymore because of a mysterious plague. Older teens run the show until they inevitably get sick. There is no cure, no solution, and it's been this way for generations. The atmosphere is bleak, but Ice Cream finds her joys where she can, and she takes care of the others as much as she is able.
It took me a while to get through this book. The dialect takes some getting used to, and there is a lot of time spent on building up the characters and the world they live in. Once things start happening though, it doesn't stop. Gradually layer after layer is revealed about these characters and their world until you question everything. This is not a beach read, but it will definitely stick with me for a long time.

This book had a really interesting premise and I really enjoyed the first third. However the plot seemed to go a little off the rails after that. The ending was also pretty lackluster considering the almost 600 pages of build up.
This one is 3.5 but not yet 4. The dialect is very original and the story is very much well developed. I liked the audio version quite a bit. Characters are well realised and the world-building is believable. it is a unique story and it is great as a stand alone!
