3.5/5 Stars. As a middle schooler and high schooler I read this books multiple times and found it very powerful. As an adult I still see why it spoke to me, but really it is now a depressing read. 20 years have passed and the issues with gun violence still remain. Also, I found that certain storylines felt unresolved to me.

I'm crying, I just finished this.
It was an intense story and has changed my opinion on gun control/use and the government in general.
This book has changed me.

This was definitely an interesting book. It felt somewhat realistic while still being a work of fiction. I didn’t realize the whole book was going to be mass quotes from our characters throughout the timeline but it worked better than expected. It was hard at time keeping up with who was who after so many names were introduced but usually based off what there quite was you could infer how they were related wether teacher, family, student, or friend. I definitely think this book did an interesting take on a school shooting story without being super in your face but at the same time it does come off very much like a cliche. But as someone who personally never dealt with this level of bullying or even seen it I can’t discount how things were portrayed especially since I’m reading the 20th anniversary addition so it isn’t set in the 2010s.
I did enjoy the random quotes and facts throughout the book provided from different articles related to school shootings and gun use/control. It was also hard to read that list at the end with school shootings. It was weird once I got to a point where I recognized more and more and remembered how it made me and everyone else feel at said time.
Also obviously for someone to write a book like this and with the sources they used I expected the author to be very pro gun control but I also didn’t expect that little pushy rant at the end. I get it and appreciate the links for more information but at the same time it was just weird to read. I don’t know if that’s in this version due to it being a “special edition” or if it was part of the original print.

Eine erschütternde Geschichte, die einen zum Nachdenken anregt und in dieser Form leider noch immer zu oft vorkommen kann.
