Words have a powerful impacts and Alan Gratz always seems to make me speechless. This book has made me have so many questions I keep on asking myself. It also contained many questions that I would still have no answers too.

There is a part towards the end when an adult says to Brandon that none of his friends will understand what happened. They will go on with their lives, laugh and play because they weren't there and they are too young to understand.
I was Brandon's age when 9/11 happened and I didn't understand it at all. This book was tough and I can't decide if I picked a good time or bad time to read it considering everything happening in Afghanistan right now. But I definitely recommend it...even if you end up crying in your car on your lunch break while reading it.

Read this with my 4th grader. She needed to read a historical fiction book for school. This book can be intense at times. Maybe I felt things more strongly because this was a major memory in my young adult life. I appreciated Gratz weaving the story of a present-day Afghani girl into the book. It’s so important to get a non-United States-centric perspective. We think EVERYONE in the world must know about “9/11”, but they probably don’t.

Many of the things Brandon experienced were stories of people I heard about on the news—people jumping from the World Trade Center to avoid dying in the fires, the blind man with his dog, running through the dust as the last tower crumbled…

Reshmina’s story told of a girl who experienced Americans invading her home and hating them for all the terrible things that happened in her village. She didn’t know why the Americans were in Afghanistan. They were just another in a long line of would-be conquerors.

The narrators for the audio version were excellent. I enjoyed listening to their voices and the expression as they narrated the story.

I recommend this book for those who want a YA/tween novelized version of events from September 11, 2001.

A great book looking at 9/11 and the effects of the war in Afghanastan. Really makes you feel like there, but at the same time realize that we are hurting lives and people over in Afghanastan.
