Ground Zero

Alan Gratz

4.35 AVERAGE

In the two accounts of September 11th worlds and a couple decades apart, Gratz caused me to think and wonder more about the events that lead to war and why we are still in it. The events in the lives of Brandon and Reshmina that cause their paths to cross are truly thought-provoking. The way he weaved their stories together was well written.

The 20th anniversary of 9/11 has come and gone but I am finishing up the books I got for just "the occasion." Wrong choice of words. But honestly, I wanted to see how authors and illustrators would remember/reflect/depict that day. A day that I can remember where I was without much recall.

I knew the dual timelines would ultimately come together, that there was something in common. However, I would have been content to just read the 9/11 story. I found trying to escape the Twin Towers compelling and engaging. Alan Gratz really did write a story that did not shy away from difficult moments or death. Which it shouldn't have.....9/11 was a horrendous day and it can't be sugarcoated.

This book …. Wow … it was amazing!! I’m just blown away by it. For such heavy subjects, they were handled beautifully! The duel POV were so well done and each character was fleshed out wonderfully. I got lost in the action of it. It was fast pace but described so well that I thought I was there. I felt like I was the one that could taste smoke in the air or was trying to catch my breath.

Honestly I had no idea they were going to connect the stories either!! What an amazing surprise !!!!

Just … it handled 9/11 really well. And then it showed all the damage that been done because of that … amazing !!!

I loved it !! And I’m happy I got to read it for book club !!
