I know a lot of people didn't like this and there were parts of it I wasn't crazy about, but for the most part, I loved it. Apparently I like to read about awful, selfish, screwed up people.

Just couldn't get into this large tome and gave up.

Franzen's writing to me is all about the characters. Though the stories move along nicely, the action is secondary. What I like most about his characters is the fact that their actions are always true to who they are. Franzen does not avoid representing their foibles and flaws. At times I found myself saying, "Oh god, why is he doing that?!" But despite my reproach, the action is always perfectly in line with the person he's created. This, to me, makes them all the more enjoyable, as I don't ever feel that they are being compromised in order to please the reader.

Decadente

Jonathan Franzen captures the aura of the past decade in the United States with stark precision. The book is painstakingly detailed and unflinching regarding the motivations and sentiments of its characters and their relationships with one another, but the book's overall tone is less acerbic and more compassionate than that of The Corrections. A gripping and timely read for anyone who is interested in family dynamics and the politics of the post-9/11 "era".

I absolutely loved the ending of this book. I felt like I could relate to the feelings of the characters that they were not living the lives they should be living. I thought it was interesting how each character found their own way even while feeling this sort of pressure. While I did get a little lost in the environmentalism that took up a portion of the book, I really enjoyed the story and the changes in the perspective from chapter to chapter.

i feel like i'll never think about this book again.

This is the first Franzen book that I've read, and I really enjoyed it. It got bogged down in a few points and the characters were on occasion a bit maddening, but overall, an enjoyable read.
