This may have been a good book. There were certainly cool world building ideas. But I couldn't stand the narrator's cadence. It was simplistic and overemphasized and made it really hard to focus on the story. I will have to try this author again in print.

I would not recommend the audio version of this book. I'm not typically super picky about readers (I appreciate really good ones, but can usually get used to nearly any voice), but this text/reader combination served to drain the charm and suspense that probably would have made the story much more enjoyable to me. As it was, the characters fell flat and largely undifferentiated, and ... well, the book's narrator is very obviously unreliable, but I would have had more patience for their fallibilities (and might have been more drawn in to their perspective) if not for said flatness.

It's a shame that I'm unlikely to find the time/space to read this on paper anytime soon. But the ending did pique my interest for the presumptive sequel, so there's that.

I came for the enby protagonist but stayed for the incredible world-building.  The characters are distinct and colourful and their interations are tense is an exciting way.  The pacing was great and the world felt vast but complete.

This is a unique sci fi story. It’s a very far future, with space colonies, cybernetic implants, and mechs. The main character has visions, delusions/angels they interact with, and can control stone. The author’s treatment and use of pronouns is part of a very cool vision of the future. It feels a bit like a slightly more optimistic Neon Genesis Evangelion, mixed with Joan of Arc. Mysteries are solved and revealed at a nice pace, continuing up the the very end, setting the stage for a sequel that I really want!
