This book was just okay? I enjoyed the ending. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy how unrealistic the characterization of the main character was, how every single outfit she wore was described in detail, and the book didn’t contribute much to cozy holiday mysteries. It was meh.
Holly's wedding is called off right before the big event when her fiance announces he's in love with the new yoga instructor. She moves back home to mistletoe, Maine on time to help with the holiday festivities at her family's tree farm. The town's historical society's is murdered in a sleigh and Holly can't help but try to find out why.
Holly is spunky and the cast of small town residents are entertaining. I enjoyed the quiet attraction between holly and sheriff grey.

If you're 27 and about to be married on Christmas Eve, one of the worst things that can happen to you is to have your worthless boyfriend kick you to the curb for a yoga instructor. Maybe the guy was looking for some greater degree of flexibility than Holly White could endure? Who knows? Who cares. She's headed home after he dumps her--back to Mistletoe, Maine where her parents own a Christmas tree farm and where the family produces an annual Christmas extravaganza. Holly plunges into the work of making this year's events a success when she notices her dad and another member of the staff at the farm engage in an argument with a cantankerous old woman who heads the town's historical society. Minutes after the argument, Holly White finds the body of the old woman on the tree farm property. It's up to Holly to help clear her dad's name and keep the tree farm from being closed down. She gets help from Sheriff Evan Grey, a guy with whom Holly could easily fall in love in future books, and there's the reporter for the local paper who would be a fine catch in his own right.
This was good enough that I'll read the next book in the series. Allyson Ryan's narration is excellent. She becomes Holly White, complete with the humor and kindness that Holly represents. You can read this at Christmas and enjoy it, but it's good enough you could read it in July and have a great time.

Like a Hallmark movie without the horrible acting...and more murder.
Everything is extra Christmas-y in this book. The town was called Mistletoe. Characters had names like Cookie, Holly, Cindy Lou Who and Fleece. All they ate were cupcakes and baked goods. All they did was decorate trees and investigate murder. It’s perfect if your in the mood for holiday cheer with murder undertones.
With a title like “12 Slays” I thought 12 people would die, but only one did. And it was the least graphic thing I’ve ever read. I guess that’s what a cozy mystery is?
Cheesy, cozy, light, fluffy, fun.

If you like cozy mysteries, you may really like this. It’s just not my .. ahem.... cup of tea.... or cocoa as the case may be. It was cute and sappy and there was in fact a mystery.
Note: there are NOT, in fact, 12 slays. Far, far fewer...
Also, please, lady, stop using the word tummy for grown adults. (Well, I actually say it but only to my husband, so not for her real audiences.)
