Listening to this audiobook was like listening to a Hallmark Mystery Channel movie. It’s a cute cozy mystery where a young woman, fresh from being dumped by her fiancé, heads to her parents in her small hometown, and discovers a dead body and a handsome outsider sheriff. The mystery and resolution aren’t bad and the overall tone is sugary sweet - perfect for Christmas and Hallmark. It was the perfect listen for the season.
"I have two cups of Santa's cinnamon tea, one spicy apple cider, and a peppermint twist hot cocoa, " I said, setting the mugs on the table surrounded by rosy-cheeked women wearing matching holiday sweaters.
Holly White has come home to Mistletoe, Maine following the cancellation of her wedding mere days before the event. Her family owns Reindeer Games Tree Farm. When the picky Historical Society leader is found dead, clobbered by a tree marker, Holly knows she must clear her family's name.
What a great start to a series! Once I started it I didn't want to put it down. I loved the town, the tree farm, the families, the cafe, the shops and of course, the Twelve Days of Reindeer Games. The farm has hosted the games for four generations and the murder puts a damper on opening day. I love the names of the games as well: Bling That Gingerbread, Build a Big Frosty, Find The Pickle and the Snowball Roll.
Holly is a strong character and doesn't use the "poor me" card even though her Christmas Eve wedding is not going to happen. I like that she is creative ans smart and just a wee bit too nosy. Dr. Evan Gray is a very nice counterpart for her. He is a former Boston homicide detective that was looking for a quiet place. I think my favorite character is Delores "Cookie" Cutter! What a hoot! Cookie was a cigarette girl in Vegas during the Rat Pack Days. She runs the Holiday Mouse Christmas Craft Shop at the farm. I love that she named her goat after her late husband!
The characters felt like real friends the more I read. I wanted to me at the Hearth for breakfast or a cup of tea with cookies.
The mystery was well done and had a few twists and turns. I figured out the culprit before the reveal but that was okay. I liked how Holly handled herself and was not afraid to reach out to Sheriff Gray when she suspected trouble.
The animals are also a plus. Holly has a cat named Cindy Lou Who. Too cute! One of the reindeer is named Kevin. That has to be the best!
I want to visit Mistletoe even though I hate snow and the cold. I can't wait to read the next book!
4.5 stars!

I’m falling so in love with Cozy Mysteries and this one is no exception! I couldn’t stop reading and I got really invested in the characters. I’m taking off one tiiiiny star because I was let down by the killer reveal but I still can’t wait to jump into book 2!
Holly White has just returned home to Mistletoe, Maine after her engagement was unexpectedly broken. Just in time for the best time of the year for her parents at their Farm, Reindeer Games, she is more than happy to partake in the festivities. It was all fun and games, until Holly stumbled across the body of the cranky Ms. Fenwick, President of the Mistletoe Historical Society in a display at the farm. Who would do something like this is such a small town like Mistletoe? Holly is determined to find out who the mysterious killer is, and ends up being the next target. Can Holly and Sheriff Grey find out the killer is before the killer strikes again?
This was an audio book I chose to read in the spirit of Christmas. It was a pretty cute book! I really enjoyed it! I really enjoy a good cozy mystery. I rate this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐.

Twelve Slays of Christmas by Jacqueline Frost was a wonderfully atmospheric Christmas murder mystery!
This was a book that I really struggled to put down! I was do drawn into the story. I just couldn't wait to see what would happen next, if the killer would be caught, and of course, if that slow burning romance would blossom!
I absolutely love when the first chapter of a cozy murder mystery begins sweet and slow, but then ends the first chapter with a bang! I was so drawn into the wonderfully warm small town holiday atmosphere already and then to have the murder happen so quickly totally captivated me!
The town of Mistletoe, Maine, where the story is set, sounds so wonderfully cozy for the holidays; murder aside of course! I love the idea of the twelve days of Reindeer Games at the farm and that people travel from near and far to attend every year.
The cast of characters was also lovely. The White family was such a perfect little family, and it was so nice to see the dynamics between each of the family members play out. I also really enjoyed learning more about the characters that were close to the White family, like the always bubbly Cookie, and the reindeer keeper, Mr. Fleece. There were also various town people and tourists that we met, many of which were so much fun! But of course, there were also characters that were more grumpy, but still interesting! And of course there was the wonderful Sheriff!
Holly White was the main character, and she was back in town living in her parents guest house on the farm after her Christmas Eve wedding was suddenly called off when her fiancé left her for a yoga instructor. While totally heartbreaking, I loved that Holly didn't let that bog her down too much. I really appreciated her strength and positivity. It was also super refreshing to see that she understood her self worth and was able to bounce back from the breakup rather quickly. I just loved that she didn't sit and wallow in her sadness or anger like I've seen in so many other books.
When Holly is the first to discover the murder scene, she and Sheriff Gray cross paths. Of course the first conversation they had was darker, and more focused on the matter at hand, but they begin to loosen up around one another shortly afterward. I thought that the banter between Sheriff Gray and Holly was so much fun right from the start! It was clear that this was going to be quite the interesting relationship.
There was so much humor and fun included in this story! I especially enjoyed the scene at a diner between Sheriff Gray, Holly, and the waitress; I laughed right out loud and immediately had to tell my husband about it.
Wonderfully written, and even though some of the general storyline arc was predictable, there was plenty that still caught me off guard and I loved every second of it!
My favorite passages:
Mom manifested from the kitchen in a puff of sugar and cocoa powder.
Strange how a town can be exactly the same and completely different at the same time.
I wanted to argue, but he was right about the pain. My body felt like a piñata after the party.
My final thoughts:
I loved this book so much. It was a perfect cozy murder mystery for the holiday season and I would highly recommend it!
This is definitely an author that I need to read more from ASAP. I've already requested book two in this series from my local library!

I really enjoyed this cozy holiday mystery! I liked the town and all the characters in Mistletoe. And the mystery and romance was good. The one thing I couldn’t stand, was her Boston accent. The sheriff was from Boston and her accent for him was just awful! I want to listen to more but I don’t know if I can stand it.
This book was fun, it was a cozy mystery that takes place in a small Maine town, where a woman is returning home to her family's Christmas tree farm after her fiance cancels her wedding. As she's adjusting to getting home the leader of the local historical society is murdered and Holly, the main character is drawn in. The setting was fun and festive and the characters were delightful. This is a really fun holiday read.
While not a holiday-crazed enthusiast, Frost's Twelve Slays of Christmas has quickly become one of my new favourite cozy series! All elements--plot, puzzle, character, romance, family, murder and more!--blended seamlessly to create a truly satisfying reading experience. Frost's well-crafted beginning to A Christmas Tree Farm Mystery series is as sweet yet daring as hot cocoa with a kick of peppermint schnapps.
